CLOTHES

Because it was regulated by the church, the basic form of ecclesiastical attire remained more or less constant. A long tunic called an alba was the basic garment. This could be wrapped around the waist with a simple belt. When they presided over Mass, an outer garment was worn on the dawn, a long-sleeved tunic called a dalmatic or a sleeveless cloak called a chasuble. A long strip of cloth called a stole was worn over the shoulders, completing the outfit. In everyday life, canon law required priests to wear simple and sober clothes. In the thirteenth century, priests in England were forced to wear a hooded cloak called a cloak cloak.
